Tengu lore

Supernatural beings of red visage and broad wings, tengu are generally troublesome, tormenting or attacking the commonfolk of Izumo with weapon and magic alike. They hold special enmity for priests and holy grounds. Yet some also act as defenders of select areas—usually woodlands—and this protection might extend to people dwelling within, if they prove sufficiently respectful and friendly toward the tengu.
