Black Canary

Black Canary was one of the founding members of the Justice League. One of the earliest non-founding members to join was Green Arrow. Dinah and Green Arrow developed a friendship, and over time, it evolved into a romance that has endured for years. When Green Arrow decided to leave the Justice League, Black Canary went with him. Though she has a temper to match his, she has often been a more thoughtful counterpoint to his impulsiveness. When his sidekick, Speedy (later Arsenal), developed an addiction to opioids, it was Black Canary who helped him overcome it after Green Arrow turned his back on Speedy in shame. Later, when another incarnation of the Justice League was formed, Black Canary was among them. She's been a key member in most versions and is often the team leader.

At one point, Black Canary opened a flower shop called Sherwood Florist in Seattle, with Green Arrow joining her in the city. While Canary investigated a drug ring and Green Arrow searched for a killer, it turned out the cases were related. Canary was captured and tortured by the drug dealers. Arriving as they were about to kill her, Green Arrow shot and killed the man attacking her. Both Canary and Green Arrow were deeply affected by these events. Black Canary had to process the trauma she suffered, while Green Arrow had to come to terms with his guilt over deliberately taking a life. Luckily, they had each other and were able to help each other through this difficult period.

Black Canary was also a founding member of the Birds of Prey, a team of female heroes formed by her and Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl. They have become close friends, and while the membership of the Birds of Prey has changed over the years, Barbara and Dinah are fixtures. Dinah often found herself opposing Lady Shiva, said by many to be the best martial artist in the world. At one point, Dinah rescued a young girl named Sin from the brutal training process to become Lady Shiva's successor and brought her home to raise her. Though it was too late to give Sin a normal childhood, Dinah wanted her to have as close to one as she could, and to show her that strength could be found in compassion and kindness, not just brutality. Dinah ultimately helped Sin find a loving foster family.

Black Canary and Green Arrow's relationship has had its ups and downs over the years. They have separated and come back together. Ultimately, they got married and fought evil together. However, the villain Prometheus orchestrated a devastating attack on the world's heroes, in which Star City, Green Arrow's home, was mostly wiped out in an explosion that killed the daughter of Arsenal, Green Arrow's former sidekick. Green Arrow killed Prometheus in revenge and, despite his allies warning him they could not condone murder, went after the villains who'd helped him. Green Arrow fought the League, even Dinah. Finally, she convinced him to turn himself in, but the damage between them had been done, and their marriage ended. After a time, they got back together, although they didn't remarry.

Black Canary met the sorceress Zatanna when they were both in their teens. Zatanna was in the Himalayas completing a ritual sacred to the Homo Magi, the people she was descended from, while Dinah was testing herself against the elements. Bonding over each other's spunk and determination, they renewed their friendship years later in the Justice League. More recently, Black Canary foiled a plan by a woman, Tina Spettro, to steal valuable artifacts. Tina was killed trying to flee, but a year later, Dinah realized her ghost was possessing the other women in her gang (who had alerted Black Canary after deciding the plot was dangerous) and making them kill themselves. She and Zatanna teamed up again to stop the vengeful ghost's murderous quest for revenge.
