Quantum's Take

Martian Manhunter is a Mythic + Warrior Champion who does Spiritual damage. Martian Manhunter is best used in PvP.

They can be obtained in The Bleed (Limited).

You should focus on the following transmutes for Martian Manhunter: Energy Gain Bonus, ATK, S DEF, P DEF.

Martian Manhunter is a champion we expected to have more synergy with Justice League, so it was a surpise to see him as the main engine for the Outsiders team. He's a direct counter to Justice League Dark and a natural PvP workhorse. As the game gets more Outsiders champions, he should become even more valuable. Unfortunately, he's a high investment champion, as he needs to be 1 yellow star with a 5 blue star legacy piece minimum. He just saw a rework in April 2026 and he is considerably better agains Spiritual AOE. He's just on the cusp of being an S+ champion. Not a must-build, but he has a ton of plug-and-play synergy.

Strategy Guide

A formidable counterattack specialist, Martian Manhunter fights through counterattacks and periodic damage. Alongside [Outsiders] or [Justice League] allies, he can extend the duration of his [Mind Ward].

Kuru PendantSignature

Martian Manhunter's signature gear. When allies cast Ultimates, he gains Attack and Physical Defense bonuses. When enemies cast skills or Ultimates, he restores HP. The faster allies cycle their Ultimates, the quicker Martian Manhunter reaches his power spike, while also effectively countering high-frequency casters.

Amazonium Alloy Shield

Significantly increases Physical and Spiritual Defense, plus a strong, reliable shield. Since Martian Manhunter takes enemy attacks to counterattack during monitoring, higher Physical and Spiritual Defense and the shield keep him alive while striking back.

Improved Fear Gas Vial

Increases HP and Dodge. Martian Manhunter's counterattacks deal spiritual damage, and strong survivability lets him stay on the field longer to monitor allies and counterattack enemies.

Modoran Sonic Bomb

Significantly increases HP. Martian Manhunter needs to stay in the front row to take damage and trigger his counterattacks, so high HP is essential for him to stay in the fight.

Lore

Ages ago, on Mars, twins J'onn J'onzz and Ma'alefa'ak were born, a very rare occurrence. The latter was a mutant without a Martian's natural telepathic abilities. J'onn grew up to become a Manhunter (police officer), married a woman named M'yri'ah, and had a daughter. Ma'alefa'ak, embittered by his isolation from his people, developed a fatal virus transmitted through telepathy and unleashed it. Exploiting a Martian's fear of fire, it caused them to burst into flame. J'onn figured out how the virus worked and tried to get his family not to use telepathy, but for Martians, it was instinctive, and he watched his family die. On Earth, Dr. Saul Erdel created a transmitter beam to contact alien life. Inadvertently, it pierced both time and space, bringing J'onn to Earth in the 20th Century.

Dr. Erdel and J'onn communicated via telepathy. Erdel helped J'onn recover from the trauma of losing his family. Sadly, when J'onn used his Martian ability to shape-change, Dr. Erdel was so shocked he had a fatal heart attack. The dying Erdel asked J'onn's forgiveness for imprisoning him on Earth, but J'onn had found a new purpose. Learning about Earth from Erdel's mind, he decided to become a law officer on his new planet as well. Taking the name and face of murdered police detective John Jones and bringing his killers to justice, J'onn became a detective in 1950s America. For a long time, he secretly used his powers to solve cases and help people. When he was spotted doing so, he adopted a more human-looking yet still green-skinned form and took the name The Martian Manhunter.

J'onn acted as a superhero while not hiding his alien background, although he continued to use the more human-appearing form so as not to frighten the people of Earth. He did have to abandon the John Jones identity when, as Jones, he saved a child from a cloud of poison gas but was engulfed by it. The gas did not harm his Martian physiology but was fatal to humans, so J'onn went along with the deception, even attending his own funeral. After that, he stopped maintaining one primary human identity and instead kept several around the world on more of a part-time basis. J'onn became a founding member of the Justice League of America and remained a team fixture. When the original lineup disbanded, he led the new Detroit-based incarnation, then the Justice League International.

When J'onn met other Green Martians, he was overjoyed. Descended from survivors who left Mars before being killed by the telepathic plague, they invited J'onn to settle with them on a planet they called Mars II. However, life there proved hard, and a majority among them—including the woman J'onn had come to love, J'en—agreed to invade and seize Earth. Learning of their plans, J'onn fled to warn Earth. He stood with the Justice League against the invaders and, in order to prevent a nuclear exchange, challenged the Martian leader, the Marshal, to a duel of honor. J'onn won, but lost what remained of his people as the Green Martians departed for parts unknown, leaving J'onn behind.

J'onn had encountered other survivors of Mars. The White Martians were a more warlike offshoot of the Green Martians. Ages ago, the two tribes fought a civil war that only ended when the White Martians were exiled to another dimension. But some escaped, including the Hyperclan, who used their shape-changing power to impersonate alien superheroes, came to Earth, and tried to discredit the Justice League to set up a full-scale invasion. Another White Martian, M'gann M'orzz, was sent to the Vega system to escape the Martian civil war and eventually reached Earth. She took on a Green Martian form because Earthlings were familiar with J'onn J'onzz, and when her true heritage was revealed, her motives were questioned, but she proved her loyalty and heroism as a member of the Teen Titans.

J'onn was killed by the Secret Society of Super-Villains during the Final Crisis but was resurrected after the Black Lantern attack, along with others who had been revived as undead Black Lanterns. He met a Green Martian, D'kay D'razz, but came to realize she was a psychopath when she tried to force J'onn to become her mate and repopulate Mars. J'onn ultimately defeated her by forcing her into the sun, barely escaping the same fate himself. J'onn returned to the Justice League, where his steadfast presence and unshakable loyalty have continued to be crucial to the team's endurance.

Martian Manhunter History

  1. Rework

    Martian Manhunter reworked

After the devs listed him in their January 2026 balance plans for limited Mythics, Martian Manhunter's kit was rebuilt around [Mind Ward]:

    • Psionic Protection: Mind Ward now counterattacks whenever an ally is hit by an enemy skill or Ultimate (200–500% of his ATK as spiritual damage), and it also hits two enemies every 5s while active.
    • Outsider Forever: instead of a flat start-of-battle DEF boost, he gets up to +120% Spiritual DEF and his allies up to +60% while Mind Ward is active.
    • Telepathic Bulwark: now raises his Max HP (up to 75%) instead of his ATK, and still extends Mind Ward with 3+ Outsiders or Justice League allies.
    • His legacy piece: the universal skill now stacks ATK and Spiritual DEF after any ally skill or Ultimate, and the exclusive skill heals him after his own skills and cuts his skill cooldowns when he's basic-attacked under Mind Ward.
    Quantum's take

This kit change was meant to address damage shortfalls and make the champion more usable in various game modes. Editing a few months after the rework, it seems these changes fell flat. Not a nerf by any stretch, but not enough of a buff to make him worth building, either.

Mind Ward extension now counts Justice League

Telepathic Bulwark used to extend [Mind Ward] by 5s only with at least 3 Outsiders allies. It now counts Outsiders or Justice League allies, so he gets the longer Mind Ward in Justice League teams too.
